butterheart is a rare walnut hybrid that brings together the rugged hardiness of our native butternut with the easy-cracking, sweet flavor of heartnut. the result is a tree that produces large, thin-shelled nuts with excellent kernel quality, while retaining the resilience needed for northern climates.

the nuts are borne in clusters and often carry the distinctive heartnut shape, but with more variation — some more elongated like butternut, others rounded. inside, the kernels are rich and buttery, with a flavor prized by both growers and wildlife. the thinner shells make them far easier to process than pure butternut, while maintaining a generous nut size.

ornamentally, butterheart hybrids show the best of both parents: the broad, tropical-looking leaves of heartnut with the rugged, native character of butternut. in autumn, the foliage turns clear yellow. as shade trees, they are handsome, wide-crowned, and fast-growing.

ecologically, they are highly valuable mast trees, feeding squirrels, turkeys, and deer while also providing cover and nesting sites. unlike pure butternuts, which have been devastated by canker, butterheart hybrids often show improved disease tolerance — making them an important part of ongoing nut breeding efforts in the northeast.
