mooncrater nursery is a field-scale propagation project based in southern maine.
we grow natives, nut trees, and ornamentals
cold-hardy trees, shrubs, and perennials from wild-collected seed. we use low-input, soil-forward methods, relying on natural outdoor stratification, deep field beds, air-prune boxes, and esoteric permaculture-style tactics to maximize germination and root health. no chemical spray, no synthetic fertilizers. all of our trees are grown in biologically active, living soil with intact fungi. our fertility system is built from the land— mountains of wood chips from trees felled on site, piles of manure directly from our co-farming neighbors (shake the tree farm) who share the land, raising their flock of sheep, rabbits, and ducks alongside the nursery— no chemicals, no sterile media, no plastic greenhouses. just time, weather, and careful observation.
current production includes:
• premium container-grown trees selected from our strongest seedling cohorts
• establishing field bareroot beds for fall and spring digging
• developing ball-and-burlap field blocks grown in living native groundcovers
• root-pruned stock intended for transplant stability and long-term structure
inventory is expanding annually as select seedlings are grown out for higher caliper offerings.
we work with homeowners, landscape professionals, restoration contractors, and land partners interested in long-term tree production systems. contract growing and project-based propagation are available.
