free dendrology workshop — the hidden half of trees
discover what tree roots can teach us about identification, growth, and successful planting.
most people know trees by their leaves, bark, and branches. but beneath the soil, every tree has another story to tell.
join us at mooncrater nursery in alfred, maine, for a free, hands-on workshop exploring the remarkable variety of tree root systems.
we’ll meet during our annual fall digging season, when we’re lifting dormant trees and shrubs from the nursery beds. you’ll have the rare opportunity to examine freshly dug plants, compare their roots side by side, and see how different species and plant families grow below ground.
some trees develop long, powerful taproots. others spread dense networks of fine roots. we’ll look at differences in shape, color, texture, and growth habits, and learn how these features relate to tree identification and establishment.
from tree identification to tree planting
we’ll also cover the practical side of working with trees: how to dig and handle roots without damaging them, why planting depth matters, how to recognize healthy root systems, and how to give a newly transplanted tree the best possible start.
you’ll see how bare-root trees are harvested, prepared, and packed for shipping, and learn techniques you can use in your own garden.
this is a working nursery, not a classroom. expect muddy boots, freshly dug trees, plenty of questions, and the chance to get your hands on some very unusual plants.
no botanical background required. gardeners, naturalists, conservation volunteers, and curious beginners are all welcome.
